Our climate controlled custom wine cellars/rooms can be designed in any size, with any budget that fits your needs. Finding the perfect place to store your wine can be anywhere from a small wine cellar closet design to a large wine room design. We can take any room in your home and design a wine cellar/room to your specifications – or we can build on a new addition specially designed for your wine needs.
From custom made wine storage racks to ambient lighting, we offer both traditional wood and contemporary metal solutions to fit your needs. With 5+ years of experience in designing everything from wine rooms to closet conversions, Austin Fine Wine Cellars knows how to maximize home wine storage and bring your wine room ideas to life.
Woods typically used for custom wood racking are cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, walnut and pine to name a few. We recommend to not stain the racking as the corks can absorb the stain and taint the wine!

1. Decide if you truly want a finish on your wine rack. Our racks are solid hardwoods such as Mahogany and Oak that do not require a finish to last a lifetime in a wine cellar. These woods will age beautifully, revealing their true colors over time. To help preserve the natural aging process we rub our racks with food grade mineral oil.
Even the softer woods we utilize, like Cedar, are specifically chosen for their durability and the species characteristics that allow it to hold up in a dark, moist environment without developing mold or pest infestations. Many of our competitors do not offer actual hardwood, but instead offer a softer wood (like ash or poplar) with a surface finish named for the wood it is colored to look like. It is important to be aware of these differences.
2. Wine rack staining and finishing jobs should not remain in an enclosed environment. An airtight, enclosed environment or a climate-controlled wine cellar raise the most concerns. This can affect the flavor of your wine as the odors might seep in through the cork. If you have a small, enclosed space housing your wine racks than it is recommended that you skip the stained finish all together.
3. Water based finishes are manufactured with a combination of synthetic resins, film forming ingredients and plasticizes. This ultimately results in an extremely durable moisture resistant surface. In comparison to oil-based finishes, the drying time of a water-based stain is significantly faster with little or no irritating fumes. However, the rapid drying feature does make it challenging to apply, but can certainly be done. Furthermore, water based stains help raise the grain of the wood.
